Domburg and the surrounding area
A few practical details
‘I got up early to walk along the beach to Domburg’
From De Trommel it is just a 20 minuten walk over the dunes or beach to Domburg.
The combination of beautiful beaches and a quaint little village set behind the dunes makes Domburg is a popular seaside retreat. The fabulous sea air, the pretty woodland areas and rolling dunes create a real holiday atmosphere.
The many small and boutique type shops and the different restaurants and cafes, mainly spanning the main street ‘de Ooststraat’ , make Domburg vibrant and often nicely busy.
There is a market in Domburg from 12.00 – 21.00 every Monday during the summer months.
If you are looking to try local and organic products, dishes and cakes, then head to the ‘Bier en Melksalon’.
If you a fish, shellfish or sushi fan then we certainly recommend ‘de Visbar’. They serve fresh fish delivered daily straight from the fish market. The closest place to eat with great food is the beach restaurant ‘Brooklyn Beach’.
Ssshhh … a roe deer. Or is it a fallow deer ??
Take a trip to the nature area ‘Oranjezon’ in Vrouwenpolder. A beautiful area that is well worth a walk through. Follow its three walking trails and traverse across the largest part of this area. You may certainly come across roe and fallow deer.
Visit the pick-your-own at ‘Court Hazenberg’. Open from June to October you can go there to pick flowers and fruit. It’s a great stop off point after a bike ride where you can enjoy the garden terrace in the sun and a delicious homemade cake!
For the best fries in town head to ‘Melis friet’ in Westkapelle located just under the dike.
Veere is a historic town with monumental buildings, narrow streets and characterful houses. It is surrounded by defensive walls dating back to the days of Napoleon. Take a walk on the walls themselves and enjoy the wonderful view of Lake Veere and the town itself.
You can most certainly enjoy artisan-made ice cream when in Veere! Visit Cappello Giallo located at Kaai 1.
The second naturally highest sand dune in Zeeland can be found in Zoutelande. You can reach it by walking over the dikes and dunes or from along the beach and then up to the top via the steps. Once you have caught your breath, enjoy the breathtaking views over the sea, beach and Zoutelande itself.
To hire bicycles head to Leo and Annie Joosse in Aagtekerke. Their bike shop is right on the village square, next to Aagtekerke’s tower.
From de Trommel you can cycle along Westkapelle’s sea wall, through the ‘Krekenbos’ woods at the foot of the dunes to Zoutelande. From there you cycle under the dunes along to Dishoek eventually reaching the boulevard in Vlissingen.
